Kilgallon of Upper Rosses

Captain James Kilgallon qualified as a Master Mariner and travelled widely on ocean-going vessels before returning home in the 1890’s. He held the post of Master Pilot under the Harbour Board for close on a quarter of a century before his death in November, 1919, aged sixty eight.

The brothers, Joseph and Andrew Kilgallon also went to sea: Joseph became a River Pilot and Andrew later served in the Royal Navy.

Andrew Kilgallon, son of Joseph, sailed on the SS Tartar as a boy and subsequently went deep sea. In his latter years he took up farming and died in July, 1977. His son, Michael, a former seaman, died in a boating accident in Sligo Bay in July, 1972.
