I am a roving bachelor,
Myself is all to blame,
I never was successful
At this funny courting game.
Oft times I had a notion
To try and learn the trade,
I never landed on my feet
I never made the grade.
I dated with a Dairy-Maid,
I dated with a nurse,
I walked a farmer's daughter,
With plenty in her purse.
I liked the Blacksmith's Katie
She had others in her eye,
I tried the widow Hegarty
And her twenty more than I.
Oh I made love to several
Of the dainty farming class,
Every one would turn me down
And fill me with distress.
I never was real fond of work
So the neighbours said,
I hunted with the Owl at night,
Then half the day in bed.
But a jolly Pedlar Lassie
Camped in McClintock's Glen,
Said if you play the Rooster,
I will play The Hen.
