Message: I found your name on the web under County Sligo. I just had a visit with my Aunt and she got me interested in our family history. This is what I know so far: My great grandmother Mary Anne Deveney was born in Rosses Point. She married John Coen from Galway and they lived in New York City. She was born on May 1, in the 1860's. She died in 1948 and had seven children. Any connection? I do not know any of my Great Grandmother's siblings or parents yet. Hope there is a connection. You have a lovely web site!

Captain Frank Devaney assures me we are related and has asked me to pass on the attached family history. We would love to know what happened to Mary Ann after she left Rosses Point with your Great Grandfather. If you ever make the voyage home I will buy you a pint in Austies!

No Information.John Francis
married Katie McGowan and produced six sons, five of who became Master Mariners, like their father. One worked in an office in Sligo. There were also two daughters, Kathleen and Sheila, who married and lived at Rosses Point. Their sons, Tom, James, Michael and Patrick are dead. John and Vincent are still alive.Kathleen and Sheila married, had a family, and live in Rosses Point.
Bridget Bee
never married and died in the 1930s.Thomas
, My father, Kieran Devaney's Great Grandfather, married Rose Kilgallon in 1918 and produced two sons and two daughters.Mary Devaney married Tom Murphy in Dublin. They had one son Willie who married and has two sons and two daughters, who are now going to school and living in Rosses Point. Helen died young in 1932. She was my sister. Mary Murphy celebrated her 80th birthday on May 1, 1999.
I went to sea at the age of sixteen in 1937 and like my younger brother Thomas retired as a Master Mariner. Now, I live in Dalkey, County Dublin, and my son Francis runs a school in Las Palmas. My daughter Maire is a bank official and lives here. My brother, Thomas and his wife Ellen, live in Crosby, near Liverpool, in England. Their son. Kieran also lives in Dublin and works for TV3. There are two girls in the family: Maureen is a deck officer at sea, and she has a son called Michael by her ex-husband, Keith Beavis. Helen is married to Keith Potter and lives in Sydney, Australia. Kieran is divorced from Sarah Cullen. He has a nine-year-old son, who is also called Thomas.James Devaney
was a Lighthouse Keeper. He married Margaret Fortune from County Wexford on April 21, 1908, and had several daughters. He retired to Skerries in County Dublin. One of his daughters still lives there. Her name is Pam and she married Joe Dardis.Catherine Katie
married Tom Gillen. They had no family and are both long deceased.Maria Maggie
was married to Willie Gillen. She owned and drove her own bus between Rosses Point and Sligo Town and earned herself the nickname Maggie the Man. They had a son and a daughter, Dessie and Muriel. Dessie became a Lighthouse Keeper, fell into bad health and died a young man. Muriel married Lighthouse Keeper Eddie McLoughlin from Donegal. They had one son who was lost in a boating accident in Sligo Bay some years ago. He was a seaman and died very young. I'm not sure how many daughters they had. Maybe three, married with families? The name of the family home in Rosses Point is Clematis. Muriel died about six months ago. Eddie still lives in the Point. From: Bmarin@aol.com

Thank you so much for the information and the coordination with Frank. I too have a seagoing background. I am a graduate of the US Naval Academy and served ten years in the US Navy flying F-14 Tomcats off aircraft carriers. I am now working in the health care industry, helping doctors run their businesses. My brother Kevin is in the Merchant Marine and has recently passed his Captain's License, unrestricted. I also have a cousin, Steven Bevan, who was in the Merchant Marine for a while. It seems like you cannot take the sea out of a Devaney, no matter where they live. I am writing a note of thanks to Frank as we speak and including a copy of Mary Ann Devaney's family tree. That pint sounds awfully good right now.

Message: I live in Hershey, Pennsylvania, but I have learned that my great grandmother, Mary Anne Devaney, came to America in the late 1800's from Rosses Point. Coincidentally, I too had a seafaring career. I attended the US Merchant Marine Academy and sailed as a ship's engineer on ocean freighters. Best regards to all the Devaneys in Rosses Point. I hope to visit the land of my ancestors in the next few years. Special thanks to Captain Frank Devaney for the family history.
