Message: THE Rosses Point Millennium Sculpture project entitled "Waiting on Shore" has moved another crucial step closer to completion. The sculptor, Niall Burton, travelled to Rosses Point recently to see where his bronze sculpture will finally stand. The contract for the completion of the sculpture was then signed at the Captain's Table in Austie's, Rosses Point. The committee were very encouraged by the generous support that they received locally, and are looking forward to the eventual erection of this beautiful piece of sculpture which will honour the memory of the courageous seamen of Rosses Point and ensure their place in the maritime tradition of the village.

Message: Mast: Esat warned Sligo County Council yesterday served a warning notice on Esat Digifone and the owner of a premises in Rosses Point on which a telecommunications aparatus had been erected. In the notice, the Council said it had come to their attention that an unauthorised development, comprising the erection of an antenna approximately 1.5m high and a dish approximately 300m diameter, had been carried out at the location. The Council advised Esat Digifone and the owner of the premises that an enforcement notice could be served on them if the planning authority considered that unauthorised development was taking place. Welcoming the Council’s action, Clr. Brian Scanlon said residents in Rosses Point, particularly those living close to the premises on which the apparatus had been erected, were very concerned over the matter. He said that Esat Digifone had to adhere to the planning regulations and he called on them to remove the apparatus without delay.

Your web site is unquestionably the most interesting, detailed and richly evocative one that I have ever encountered. Although I doubt that the Hickeys or the Sullivans have any roots in the area, we'll definitely be putting you on our list. Incidentally, the parties desirous of saving Elsinore House would do well to set up a method to make donations on the web. I'm sure that many virtual visitors who are Yeats' fans would be willing to contribute. Thank you again for a lovely experience.

Message: No ‘West’ decision yet By Leo Gray A decision on whether this year’s West of Ireland Open Amateur Golf Championship will go ahead will not be taken for another two weeks. The prestigious event, which attracts thousands of visitors to Sligo and is the traditional kick-start to the tourism season, is due to take place at County Sligo Golf Club, Rosses Point, over the Easter week-end. The ongoing foot and mouth restrictions have caused the cancellation of many high-profile sports events over the past two weeks but, as of now, there are no plans to scrap the ‘West’. A meeting of the Championship organising committee is scheduled for March 28th. Co. Sligo Golf Club captain, Mr. Tony Cunningham, told the Sligo Champion that no decision on the West would be taken in advance of the March 28th meeting. Entries for the Championship close on March 24th.

Message: Effort under way to bring back priceless Yeats portrait to Sligo By Jim Gray Renewed efforts are being made to have a priceless portrait of the poet, W. B. Yeats, by his father, John Butler Yeats, returned to Sligo. The historic painting was presented to the Captain and officers of the naval corvette, “Macha” by the poet’s widow when they brought the remains of W.B. Yeats from Nice for re-burial at Drumcliffe in 1948. Twenty-four years later, in 1972, the Naval Service formally handed over the painting on permanent loan to the Yeats Collection in the Co. Sligo Museum. But, in 1985, the painting was returned to the Naval Service for an exhibition and has since remained in their headquarters at Haulbowline. Now, a number of Yeats enthusiasts are campaigning to have the portrait returned to the Niland Collection which is housed in the newly refurbished Model Niland Centre at The Mall.
