Sligo County Council is to examine ways of improving access to Coney Island following a submission from Councillor Tony McLoughlin.
Councillor McLoughlin asked at a meeting of the Council that the County Engineer examine the causeway route to the island from the Strandhill Road and also the pier on the Rosses Point side with a view to providing a safe landing place for its inhabitants and visitors.
County Manager, Robert Kearns, agreed that the island was a very important visitor attraction, particularly in the summer months and said that while the causeway was not a public road, the Council could carry out works on it with the members' consent.
He added that a survey would also be carried out on the pier at the island with a view to making improvements.
