A special Millennium committee has
been established in Rosses Point with the aim of erecting a bronze sculpture in the
village to commemorate those who lost their lives at sea.
The group have chosen the figure of a woman with her arms outstretched looking across
Sligo Bay as being the most appropriate symbol. The sculpture will reflect the anguish of
many women who watched and waited for the return of their loved ones.
The project will cost in the region of £50,000 but already there has been some generous
individual contributions while Brian McEniff, owner of the Yeats Country Hotel is prepared
to offer a site for the sculpture which will overlook the Bay, Elsinore House and Coney
Island.
While the sculpture will be commemorative, it will also serve, say the committee, to remind future generations of the seafaring tradition of Rosses Point and help to recall the brave men who weathered storms, hardships and wars at sea. The bronze sculpture will also serve to commemorate those who left during the Famine and were lost at sea along with those drowned in more recent tragedies. The Millennium committee comprises members of the Rosses Point Tidy Towns group, the local Development Association and Heritage Group along with a number of interested individuals.
