Two
projects in Rosses Point are on a priority list revealed by Sligo County Council
for 2004.
County
Manager Hubert Kearins has detailed eighteen projects which he aims to have
completed or moved on significantly by the end of this year.
And
chief among them is the construction of a marina in Rosses Point and major
improvement works to the pier on Coney Island.
The
marina in Rosses Point has been a long-term goal of County Sligo Yacht Club,
based in the seaside village.
Following
various fund-raising efforts and allocations from the government and local
authorities, the project has been brought forward to development stage.
The
green light for the project, which will be financed by the Department of the
Marine, from Sligo County Council and from the club itself, is expected within a
matter of weeks.
The
major advantages of the new marina will be in attracting tourists to the area
and providing year-round safe berths for the yachts normally anchored in the
Sligo Channel.
Within
sight of the present Yacht Clubhouse is the pier of Coney Island, which will
receive much need repair and upgrading work in 2004.
The
pier is one of two access points to the island, the other being the sand-bank
link to Strandhill, which is only viable at low tide.
The
pier receives a great deal of use during the summer months and it is hoped that
repair work on the pier will be finished before this summer.
The
priority list drawn up for the 2004 County Council book of estimates also
includes the finalisation of plans for Sligo’s new library and museum, the
introduction of a metropolitan area network (broadband) and the construction of
a new branch library and council offices in Ballymote.
