Message: I have a great interest in Rosses Point because as my wife, Thelma is from
a great seafaring Norwegian family, the Nilsens. Dan, who worked for the Limerick
Steamship Company for many years, had great tales to tell and his daughter Helga, who's
mother had the Windmill Pub in Limericks' dockland knew Austie Gillen and was asked to
come to Rosses Point to play music in the Elsinore Hotel as she was a gifted accordian
player and Irish dancer. She is now 81 years of age, and has great memories of the old
seafaring days, her deceased husband was from another great seafaring family, the
Connollys of Cushendall, Co. Antrim.

Message: Greetings from California! I am originally from New York City where my
family (the Gillen side) arrived in 1870. My great grandfather, Michael Gillen, was born
somewhere in Ireland in August 1860. I have not been able to find any Irish connection to
him and would love to add to the limited knowlege we have of him. He married Anne Ferrick
(born May 1864 in Ireland) and they had 9 children. He was a milk dealer in Manhattan, and
since he owned a house must have been somewhat successful, at least early on. As the
unofficial historian for the family any help or leads would be appreciated. I own The
William Lester Art Gallery in Marin County north of the Golden Gate Bridge and San
Francisco. Any "family" visiting in the area are always welcome. The gallery #

of what I know comes from census records (which aren't very reliable), obituaries and
church records. My great,great,great-grandmother was BRIDGET (BIDDY) MCGOWAN, born 7
February 1814 in County Sligo, Ireland. In 1832 she left Ireland for Canada and in 1838
she married LUKE TAHANEY She had 6 children: MARGARET, JOHN, EDWARD, THOMAS, WINIFRED AND
PATRICK. She died 21 May 1894 in Saginaw, Michigan (USA). A possible brother of BRIDGET
was MICHAEL born ca. 1804 County Sligo; died 21 May 1872 and was a godfather to BRIDGET's
daughter, MARGARET in 1839 in Ontario, Canada.. A possible sister of BRIDGET was MARY
MCGOWAN, who was the godmother of BRIDGET's son, JOHN, in 1841. I have records on several
other MCGOWANS, but am not sure how they tie in with my family. I'd enjoy hearing from
anyone with information on any of these families and would be happy to share what I have.

ancestors to Thomas McGinnis and Anne Kennedy from Co. Sligo. They were married in 1808
and are in Drumderry townland, Kilmacallan parish in the Tithe Applotment. A Patrick
McGuiness lived there too. They are not here in Griffiths. I've located the baptism
records for Thomas McGinnis' ten children in a Taunagh (Riverstown) Catholic church book.
Nine immigrated to Boston, MA beginning around 1845. They eventually settled in Houston
county Minnesota. One girl, Ann, remained in Ireland and married a Fryer sometime before
1887. I'm interested in who Thomas McGinnis' parents were; where the Taunagh parish church
was located; when the McGinnises came to Co. Sligo; and whether there are descendents of
Ann McGinnis Fryer living in Ireland today. Can you offer any suggestions? Jerry Klug

And it was on the back of a beautiful Irish draught mare, Classybawn who reminded me of
the horse in the tale of Tir Na nOgh. It was indeed magical to ride in the country of my
father's people. We spent a lovely evening at Hargadon's Pub on O'Connell Street. Mary

married to Bessy born circa 1822 and had the following children all born in Ireland: Sarah
1841, Mary 1843 (my great grandmother), Patrick b. 1845, and Thomas born c. 1849. In my
Grandmother's obit it says, " her grandfather was United Sstates consul to sligo,
Ireland in 1843 and his granddaughter was born under his roof". At the age of five
she returned with her parents and lived for a time in N.Y. They were Catholic and I need
to find which parish they belong to in Sligo. Would Griffith Evaluation cover this time

of BRUEN and FINNEGAN. (Daniel) Bruen married Esther Bruen about 1860 in Sligo. I know of
only two daughters: 1. Catherine Bruen married John Finnegan. One of their children, Mary
Ann Finnegan, was born 16 February 1871 and christened on Candlemas Day 1871 in Laehara
Chapel, Dromore West. Mary Ann married Patrick Finnegan(born 9 June, 1865 in Sligo). 2.
Esther Bruin (born 1850 in Sligo), married Patrick Finnegan, (born about 1836, son of
Walter Finnegan and Catherine) in Sligo. Esther is my ggmother. Their children were
Catherine Finnegan( b. 24 March 1864 in Sligo, and married John Barry); Patrick Finnegan
(born 1866 in Sligo); Mary Finnegan (born 1869 in Sligo) and Winifred Finnegan (born 1
March 1874 in NYC, and married James Hoban). I think these families emigrated to NYC about
1871-72. I look forward to corresponding with anyone familiar with these families.

Message: Georgie Bruen had all his cousins staying up at the hotel and I couldn't
get in, never mind get up to the golf club. But the seagull and I have been practising and
I am now confident I can play in any competition. I must tell you about my hole in one
this afternoon. The seagull set the ball up on the top of the light and I took aim at
Georgie's window on Oyster Island. The seagull tells me the ball bounced off the Mountain,
hit Ben Bulben and then shot across the bay to land in a bucket of Quaker Oats which
Georgie was using to feed the horses. The seagull tells me it was a birdie, but I know
differently. I don't want to go riding again, golf is the game for me. I'm off now to the
Ryan Hotel. I've been invited by one of Georgie's friends. They obviously want to meet a
top golfer. God Bless and see you soon.

Message: Wonderful site! I especially enjoyed reading about Austie Gillen. My
maiden name is Gillan and I would love to trace my roots! My Grandfather's name was Robert
Crooks Gillan. He was born on January 15th, 1912. His father's name was Edward Gillan and
was Irish. His mother's name was Margaret Heatherington. This was his mother's second
marriage, so we're not sure whether this name was her maiden name or her first husband's
name. My Grandfather had 2 sons, Robert and Brian and one daughter, Moira. My family is
from Scotland, and I believe my Grandfather was born in Scotland, although I'm not sure
when his father moved there. I moved to Canada from Glasgow, Scotland with my parents in
1979. If anyone has any further information on my branch of the 'Gillan/Gillen family',
I'd love to hear from them! Deborah Kuhnen

Message: Just returned from a great game of golf on the new course which the
Seagull is building for me in the sandhills on the back of Coney Island. I was playing
against John McGowan's Bull. Naturally, I won and a now feel ready to join the Sligo Golf
Club. Though I doubt they have a golfer who could match me. I'm told Willie Bruen missed
Georgie's Mission at the hotel. He went to Dublin for the week. The Seagull tells me
Kieran Devaney is coming home for the weekend with Frances and Phillip. I probably won't
see them as I shall be golfing on Saturday and going to Mass on Sunday. May God bless you
all.

Message: Hi folks, My pc is back in action so expect lots more new stuff over the
next while that Kieran has assured me he has. I have a major announcement to make and that
is that Sligo Bay Lifeboat is now a fully fledged and operational station - IT'S OFFICIAL!
The word came on Wednesday night and the crew and all involved retired to Harry's for a
small celebration. If there's anyone in the Sligo area who wishes to support the
Lifeboats, there is a fundraising night in Aughris tomorrow night (Saturday 28th). There's
a bus leaving Rosses Point @ 8pm. It promises to be a great night. If you're a fan of
lifeboats look out for lots more stuff on the SBLB page soon. Bye for now, Ciaran
