We held a joint press conference at 4 a m this morning in Austie's and none of the motherless screwdriver operators turned up. Worse Austie said that we had to pay for the drink we had ordered, so MM and meeslf are now suffering the mother and father of all hang-overs!! Is there a doctor on this web site? Seagull

You have disgraced yourselves again, as that young scallywag Willy Yeats who sat at my feet as a boy with his brother Jack said upon the Abbey stage when your ancestors booed Synge's The Playboy of the Western World. You promised me and the Seagull vote after vote and what did we get? Well one vote each, imagine we were the only individuals who voted! Hold on now we didn't have a vote? So who was this great person, the one solitary rock of sense in the community. Own up and we will treat you to dinner in Austie's. Meself and Seagull are off to Melbourne to regain our strength with Foley, he wants us to count the election fund! So see you in a few weeks. Austie could you put on your old clothes and stand on the perch? Slan MetalMan

A garbled message, could he come to the parish priest's house in Rosses Point immediately. Some fifteen minutes later he pulled up outside the priest's house and was flabbergasted by the line of adult men crying and wringing their hands as they pointed to the sea. When the Bishop looked at the spot at which they were pointing and saw what was missing he broke down the door of the house and went straight to the drinks cabinet. Within ten minutes the gathering were singing hymns, the Bishop shoutin, "For God's sake will ye harmonise men and sing with one voice!"

Message: HERCULES:contd; Opposite the Catholic Bishop was the residence of Church of Ireland Bishop Tinsel,MA.,DD , etc, etc. and his missus Genevieve. It was her husband's scream that woke Mrs T. The Bishop was sitting up like a man who had met the Devil."O God O God" he sobbed. "What ever is the matter, dear", inquired Mrs T. "I dreamt that every RC in Elphin joined our protestant church!" he uttered. Just then the chamber maid knocked on the bedroom door and entered. -"The Rector from Rosses Point wishes to speak with you urgently, my Lord, he is on the 'phone." Bishop Tinsel donned his dressing gown and went to the telephone, where he heard, "My Lord I am insane! Come quick, hurry, please" With that the Rector in Rosses Point burst into tears, and the Bishop was dumbfounded. He quickly dressed and had his chauffeur Richard Lyons bring the Daimler to the front door.

By the time he reached the door the banging had been added to by shouting and wailing! Finally he opened the door and was met by Mrs McWeeney of the Swan Villa hotel, "It's gone, it's gone!" was all she could say. Guard Carr eventually calmed her down and she told him "The historical cannon gun on the shore is gone". He 'phoned Supt McNamee in Sligo and informed him of this report. McNamee replied "Well isn't that strange there's a number of reports from the Point saying the MetalMan is gone. I'll send Detective Chatten to question Barney Coyle, Gangster Reynolds, the Young's and the McLoughlin's here in Sligo and you check Ernie Daly in Strandhill, they might be able to assist us with our enquiries." Just as they deliberately witheld the office of Mayor from my late father Gerry Foley between 1955 and 1967 and his colleague John Fallon from 1940 to 1973, these self appointed censors are continuing to refuse the office of Mayor to Alderman Declan Bree, simply because the man is a declared Socialist in the following of men and women like James Connollly, Countess Markievicz, Francis Sheehy-Skeffington, AE and many more whom our large chested politicans tell us they seek to emulate for the good of Sligo.

"These aborigines always look the same" thought the Bishop as he glanced at the child. The boy wiped his runny nose with the sleeve of his pullover, making it wetter that perviously. He was five minutes late for class. On his arrival the teacher Daddy Shine asked, "What kept you?" The boy took his seat and snarled."I was having my breakfast!" "What did you have?" asked Daddy Shine. "-A boiled egg" Five minutes later his twin brother arrived as Daddy Shine remarked, Well the Swift brothers are here, hurrah. Why are you late?" The same reply came to Shine who replied well if your brother had a boiled egg why are you five minutes later? -HAD I A SPOON HAD I!! put Daddy Shine in his place, for the boys mother was worse to deal with if her sons complained.

The villagers of Rosses Point already have a memorial at the church graveyard, and the villagers, and I am sure the people who were lost at sea, would not like to see £55,000 spent on a Bronze statue. Instead this money could be spent on turning the Old Rosses Point School into a Memorial Hall. And we do not want to upset the Metal Man who has been celibate for nearly 200 years,to have a bronze woman tempting him to come ashore for a drink. Does anybody else have a comment on this subject?

The weather in this part of Pennsylvania, USA, has been absolutely brutal and, what is worse, there seems to be no relief in sight. After visiting your lovely website, I could almost feel those wonderful, cooling, healing breezes and could also almost hear the music of the words as Yeats was reciting them. Thanks to the captain and the pilot for such a grand and safe sail, but most of all, thanks to Jimmy Bruen of Liverpool and Sligo for pointing me in such a wonderful direction! God be with each and every one of you. Peg

Sister Mary Vincent head mistress of The Line School had all her young charges lined up outside the school ready to march two abreast to the Cathedral for Mass and a sermon from Canon Tom Hanley. "Now boys" she shouted at the top of her voice, and for all of her four feet nine inch height she had a voice the envy of any Army Sergeant, " ciunas" "You there Candy. Gannon, I taught your father and Foley, your father went to the Ursuline Convent, but I know your brains, and you too Gillen, and Westby your Uncles and your Aunts were all taught by the Mercy Sisters. We will make something of you for the world. I taught Sean Fallon how to play soccer in this yard. Some day soon he will be an International footballer. Hang in there and with me and the help of God you will all be famous. Isn't that right Miss Currid and Sr Veronica?" And the boys all giggled not realising the great impact this little nun had on many Sligo lads in the past and for many years after.

So much so that when he died, there was a two page obituary in the local paper (The Champion?) about him. I am specificly looking to see what part of Sligo County they were from. Any relation to Patrick Austin? I am also looking to find my family roots which is the Foley's of Ballytogher in Sligo County. My grandfather, Patrick James Foley came from there to Chicago and married Ethel Freeman. They had 5 children. One of which was from Ethel's previous marriage. Patrick was a streetcar conductor in Chicago and died in 1945. My father met them in 1972 but had died before all of that info was passed on.

Message: I was searching for information on 'Pistol Duelling'. We are presenting a civil war reenactment of the last pistol duel held in the state of Arkansas between Confederate Generals Marmaduke and Walker (1864). To add more realistic details, I was wanting to read the actual rules that these gentlemen would have followed. As far as the internet go, this is the first time I have ventured outside the U.S. and your web page is very impressive! Thank you very much!
